Time for Fox News………not the “Fox News” that is known to be politically right leaning. My Fox News is that a skulk(family) of Red Foxes, has moved in under my front porch. The kits (pups) appear to be about 4 weeks old.
In the last few days they have begun to leave their den and in the evening play in and around the front of my house. We think there is a one female adult and 5 or 6 kits. Due to the time of day and location of the den, it is hard to get any really good pictures.
Many people consider foxes to be a nuisance animal, but I have found that they have kept the local rodent population very much under control. The only problem with them is that my front porch looks like a murder scene due to the animals they have killed and then eaten.
Once the kits leave the den, it will all have to be cleaned up and probably I will have to seal up the den so that they can no longer dig under my front porch. But, it is amazing that even in such a major metropolitan area as Chicago has become the amount of wildlife that still flourishes.
In the last year, we have seen Foxes, Coyotes, Deer, Beavers, Raccoons, and Possums to name a few. As long as these animals are not a danger to people or pets we should try to live in harmony with them as they are beneficial to us in many ways. Just a reminder that these are WILD ANIMALS and should not be approached nor fed. All the pictures you see here were taken with a Telephoto lens from inside of my home. Foxes can be rabid, and while they are not known to generally attack people, a female fox can and will quite viciously protect it’s young.
I apologize for not updating recently, ongoing family issues have prevented it. Hopefully that is now mostly behind us.
